Chantel Yearling believes that “Children are curious, smart and motivated to grow themselves. As adults, we need to help children understand real-life situations.”
Yearling’s commitment to child development and growth, along with her training and experience as a Child Life Specialist, make her the ideal candidate to serve as the first Guide in the Elementary Studio at Acton Academy, in Sioux Falls, SD, set to open in fall 2021.
At Acton Academy, a Guide is responsible for facilitating the school’s unique learning design: Learning to Learn, Learning to Do, and Learning to Be. A lifelong learner herself, Yearling states that “Children develop at a different pace, and their interests are not all the same. I love how Acton Academy cultivates children to be their best selves.”
Rather than high stakes test scores and memorization found in many traditional classrooms, Acton believes that learning is a richer and deeper experience when the Guide offers insightful questions and facilitates hands-on learning. Guides use the Socratic method, always responding to students’ questions with new questions in order to refine students’ critical thinking skills.
The Elementary Studio is accepting applications for fall 2021. If your curiosity is piqued and you think Acton Academy may be a good fit for you and your family, schedule a call with Aaron Johnson, co-founder, and head of school, Acton Academy Sioux Falls.
Every child is a hero
At Acton Academy, we believe that every child has boundless potential and is capable of more than is typically supported in a traditional classroom style of learning. Our learning environment encourages students to develop personal virtues such as honesty, hard work, responsibility, kindness, and empathy. Armed with self-discipline, hands-on learning, and decision-making skills, students prepare to find their calling and leave their mark on the world.
Sometimes referred to as a “one-room schoolhouse,” Acton Academy is an innovative, mixed-age learner-driven school serving children ages 4-15. The school offers three studios designed to create flexible spaces for work, learning, and play. They are tight-knit communities of mixed-age children who support each other and collaborate daily. Children work together to create rules for the space that support each other’s social and problem-solving skills.
Spark Studio, for ages 4-7, lays the foundation for the joy of learning by cultivating curiosity, creativity, and the ability to ask good questions.
Elementary Studio, for ages 7-12, allows children to embark into the real world of opportunities and responsibilities.
Middle School Studio, for ages 12-15, encourages students to take control of their education and challenge themselves.
Acton Academy Sioux Falls is part of the network of 240+ Acton Academies around the world and follows the same Learning Design (curriculum) that was created at the original Acton Academy campus.
